We had an amazing time participating in the in-person return of the largest hearth, patio, and barbecue event in America earlier this month! Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association's HPBExpo took place at the Georgia World Congress Center Authority and was the perfect venue for networking and showcasing products.

Throughout the 3-day event, we shared ways our products, like our award-winning Coyote Pellet Grill and Flat Top Grill, upgrade outdoor spaces to sanctuaries.

We recently spoke with Brian and Sandra Bushfield of West Coast BBQ Shop about their business, the state of the industry and their absolute favorite grilling recipe. They are a standout store in their area, and Yelp user posted this review, “This is your go to shop for all things grilling!! Great location, service, and inventory!!! Awesome seeing the grand opening event they had yesterday for the community!!!

Can you tell us about the history of the West Coast BBQ Shop?

We began our family business March 2009 as Hot Sauces n More with on-line sales only. With the growth of our business, we moved from the garage to a warehouse. In 2013 we added BBQ grills, sauces & seasonings to our inventory and moved to Otay Ranch Town Center in east Chula Vista. Soon our grill, sauces & seasonings were more than our hot sauce sales.

It was 2021 when we moved to our current location San Miguel Ranch, still in east Chula Vista, where we expanded our grill line to include accessories, sauces, and seasonings and much more. It was time to let our customers know that we were more than hot sauce.

In the fall of 2022 we changed our name to West Coast BBQ Shop.

What is your background in the industry?

I have 13 years’ experience in the business cooking on everything from gas, charcoal, and pellets.

How has your business fared during the different stages of the pandemic?

The first two months of the pandemic was very slow and nervous not really knowing what was going to happen. Then it seemed like people were starting to get comfortable stuck at home not being able to go on vacations or do other activities they looked to improve their grills with upgrades and outdoor kitchens and our business took off.

What are the keys to creating great relationships with your customers?

Listening to the customers questions and how they can improve their grilling game. We have a passion for what we sell. Making it our business to be knowledgeable about our products and full customer satisfaction. Staying one step ahead of our competitors.

You carry the Coyote Pellet Grill, what differentiates it from other pellet grills?

The higher temperature, bigger digital display, built-ins and the 3 probes. The front-loading hopper is such a feature above of all the rest.

What are the features of the Coyote S-Series that will appeal to your customers?

The cast burners are above the rest. Stadium light and the orange knob lights when the fire is at its peak. Sear zone, perfect for a quick sear for a quick delicious meal.

Tell us a little bit about the sauces and seasonings that you offer?

We offer a wide variety of sauces and rubs if we do not use them, they do not make it in the store.

How do you see the industry evolving in the coming years?

I see our industry growing as people upgrade their grills and the growing trend of outdoor kitchens.

Do you have a favorite grilling recipe?

A simple and delicious Korean short rib recipe featuring a soy-sesame glaze. These Korean short ribs are easy to prepare and insanely delicious!

Ingredients: ¾ cup Soy Sauce, ¾ cup Water, 2 TBS Rice Vinegar, 2 TBS Sesame Seed Oil, 4 cloves of Fresh Garlic minced, 2 TBS Fresh Ginger minced, 4 fresh Green Onions chopped (green part only)

Instructions: Whisk all the above ingredients together in a bowl. Place the short ribs in a large zip-top plastic bag and pour the marinade over the top. The short ribs need to marinate for at least 4 hours, but you can also marinate overnight for more flavor in the refrigerator. The short ribs need to cook on a grill 350 to 400 heat direct. On a Coyote C-Series Grill the suggest timed time is 5 -6 minutes per side. You want to leave enough room between each piece, so the ribs will cook even.

Rockbridge Associates, that in 2021, 44% of grillers were women. This,
