The Instagram followers of Inspire Me! Home Décor were treated to a panoramic view of the outdoor space designed by Farah Merhi and brought to life by Coyote Outdoor and RTA Outdoor Living. You can enjoy her video post here. There were many comments and questions from her ‘Insta-Family’ and we wanted to share Farah’s vision and her outdoor design tips.

Is designing an outdoor space very different from how you design an indoor space?

As much as I focus on creating a beautiful looking space, I strongly consider needs and functionality. I ask myself, who will be enjoying it and make sure to discuss the ultimate goal and what are the top three must haves? You would be surprised at the different needs each household considers important to them. But ultimately, it all comes down to durability and using materials that will withstand the elements. Unlike the indoors, designing for the exterior requires research and making sure the right material can be installed where you live for longevity. That goes for flooring, furniture, as well as material you’re using to build outdoor kitchens and fireplaces.

How would you describe the process and were there special considerations?

Designing my own backyard was so much fun. We have been planning on tackling this project for a while now and when it was time to begin, I knew we wanted to design a space that reflects the interior of my home in flow and functionality. Living in Michigan, we have more cooler weather than warmer weather, so a fireplace was a must. Being that our outdoor space extends off our third level which is the basement and not our kitchen from our main level, it was important for us that we add a full outdoor kitchen which includes a sink, trash drawer and mini fridge. When entertaining and during outdoor dinner parties, I did not want to have to go in and out of our home for things like drinks, washing something or grabbing ingredients that we could easily have stored away in an outdoor mini fridge. Having all the convenience of the indoors in our backyard makes entertaining and family grilling nights a lot more enjoyable. Like any project, we were working within a budget, so we wanted to make sure that everything used in this space would last us a long time, so we focused on materials that we know are durable.

Why do you think outdoor kitchens have become such an important part of today’s outdoor rooms?

Homeowners are looking for ways to maximize their homes. Outdoor living has become an extension of the indoor living and when the warmer weather hits, they tend to spend more time outdoors then in. What better way to maximize one’s backyard? Adding a kitchen offers convenience. Companies like Coyote Outdoor and RTA Outdoor Living are making it more accessible for homeowners to design that dream backyard that is fully equipped for entertaining. Even those with smaller spaces like condos or apartments can create that outdoor oasis with products like the Coyote Electric Grill. Families get to enjoy their outdoor living space and it adds property value. In the end, the investment becomes well worth it.
